What is the best way for me to avoid split ends?
A) Split ends are longitudinal breakage and fraying of the inner hair fiber, giving the hair a feathered look. A split end can be betmeen .79 to 1.18 inches (2 to 3cm) in lenght and can be found at any part of the hair strand, particularly at the end. Difficult to treat and impossible to cure unless you trim off the split ends, the best way ot avoid this problem is to take preventive haircare measures:
A)Do not overdo hairstyling-Eliminate the application of direct health such as frequent hairstyling with blowdryer, hot curlers, hair straighteners, and or curling iron.
B) Cut down on chemicals-Avoid using too many chemical products such as gel mousse and hair spray. These weaken the hair, leading to split ends. Avoid products containing alcohol.
C) Be gentle with your hair-Don't brush hair when it is wet. Avoid over brushing. When you brush, use a hairbrush with soft, even bristles or use a wide-toothed comb. Avoid nulon bristles, period.
D) Use the right accessories. Use hairpins with smooth ends. Avoid using rubberbands to tie your hair. Instead, do up your ponytail with a soft scrunchie or other fabric elastic band.
E) Moisturize. Split ends are caused by lack of moisture in the hair. After shampooing/conditioning the hair. Use a deep conditioner once a week to help the prevention of split ends. Very important as well, drink lots of water.
F) Schedule an appointment. Make a standing appt. every 4-6 weeks for a trim to get rid of those bad ends.
I work out a lot and I am African-American, what is the best way for me to wear my hair?
If you are going to the gym or for a run, try these style savers.
A) For straightened hair, try brushing your hair into a firm ponytail. Make sure to use an elastic holder covered in cloth or a holder without a metal clasp to avoid ripping out your hair. Place a sweat band at your hairline. This is not only to keep the sweat out of your eyes , it will keep your edges in place. Once the ponytail is in a twist, secure it with a hairpin. This will allow the hair to retain body and bounce after your work out.
B) If your hair has been curled with a ot curler or roller set, try pin curls. Th s is done by taking large sections of the hair, combing each section into one large curl. twisting the curl down onto the scalp and securing the curl with a bobby pin or two prong metal clips. 6-10 large pin curls should suffice. After your workout, let the hair dry naturally. Afterwards, finger style your hair in place. This preserves your curls and keeps the hair full of body and volume.
C) If you are taking part in water sports, wrap your hair around your head in a circular motion using metal duckbill clips to hold the hair in place. Cover your hair with a satin or silk scarf. Finally, cover the scarf with a latex or silicone swim cap.
D) African American women that wear their hair completely natural without any chemical what so ever will just jump in and work out. There's no stopping them.
